Hi all (especially Marianne), I've just finished reading Dark Space (I've read the first three Parrish novels several times as well) and I guess I found Dark Space a more recognisable beast than the Parrish books. Did anyone else get a bit of an early- Dune-vibe from DS? I mean, I don't mean it as a bad thing, I liked the first few Dune books and I sort of felt there was a bit of similarity in the settings and social structures. Marianne, do you use other authors for a bit of inspiration or do you use something else for your inspiration? ' I would also like to point out that Sole is the coolest/most off the wall/scariest character I have come across in an SF novel for a long time-well done!

Hi there Stellar,
I wouldn't say 'Dark Space' was influenced by Dune. I wanted to write about an arid planet because of my own personal experiences. The hard thing was keeping out accidental similarities to such a famous classic. For instance, the name Djeserit. I wanted an arabic name for her and it was only afterwards that I realised how close it was to the 'Bene Gesserit".
I wrote about a repressive aristocracy because that is what I was interested in (again, personal experience).
However, I knew that the story (books 2,3) would veer right away from Araldis, so I pursued what I wanted to do *in spite* of some likenesses to Dune.
To answer your question better though - I don't use other authors for ideas inspiration, but I do get excited if I read a good book, and that always motivates me to write more. best MDP

Yeah, the other similarity I picked up was "Araldis" and "Arackis" from Dune. I'm excited the story is heading away from that, though.
