Just thought I'd get some opinions on this. It's easy enough to write off Doc Del Morte as deranged, or evil, or any variation on those things. But why do you think he did such horrible things, barring the explanations cited above? What could move somebody to do what he did, presuming he had some deeper motive than cruelty or money or whatever?

Oooh... *ponders*
Maybe he's like a less charismatic version of Hitler, trying to shape things to his own twisted world order... and maybe he wants to do this because of some kind of horrible incident in his childhood.
Argh! I'm no good at this!

Hi Mouse,
One of the hardest things to do when you are writing in first person is to adequately convey the motivations of the other characters.
More of Del Morte's history is revealed in Crash Deluxe. It should help piece things together for you. bests Marianne

Oooh, any idea yet when it should be coming out? *dies waiting* The whole deal with Del Morte and the Pets has definitely caught my interest, as I suppose my fic demonstrates. ;D I'm not just digging for thoughts to give me ideas for it, though. It's my firm belief that any realistic 'villain' will have some sympathetic motive, no matter how deeply it may buried, an angle from which their actions make perfect sense, even if it is a twisted sort of sense.
I suppose when it comes down to it I'm just curious!

Yep... we need to know when it comes out, and whether Wombebe will die... *gives Marianne the Glare of Doom* If you kill Wombebe I will write a terrible Star Wars/Parrish crossover parody!

Maybe Del Morte was trying to solve problems he saw with the humans, maybe in some way he felt humans could better themselves through being half tec or changed to all the weird things he did, then he could of got power crazy, trying to play god and kinda becomeing one in a way, i dunno, that is a hard one!
cant wait for Crash Deluxe ;D ;D

That's a good theory, CJ - I like that one. Or maybe Del Morte was injured and had something replaced, and he resented that and took it out on all the poor defenceless kids...

We're all on similair themes, here's one: "The man from Del Morte" has a wasting disease, that's why he needs an exoskeleton, and is experimenting to find a way to reverse it. The addition of mech to the human body ironically results in a different kind of wasting so that failed. Then he created/discovered the regenerative Eskalim but that is also a failure 'cos it takes you over and makes you nuts. But!! Parrish has resisted it. Parrish: "Oh crap." Hey!! Maybe all the experiment subjects have the same condtion, so he's kinda also trying to help them while experimenting!! Maybe the cabal all have it, that's why they float - 'cos they use their magic minds and so the disease becomes a strength and so Daac doesn't want it cured!! and rest ... ;D

I don't think Parrish can hold out much longer...

This begs the question of the origin of all the genetic crossovers in the first place.
The first hint we have of the crossovers is the Dogboys with Jamon. Now what I wan't to know is where did the genetic splicings start? Are they the result of gene therepies or are they born that way and have been manipulated at the embryonic stage?( a hell of a lot easier than gene manipulation after birth) But if that is the case do they have the lifespans and mature as dingo's or humans. (I know, I know, too much science).
As for Wombebe and the rest of the Dis, it feels like a mad scientist paradise. One large petri dish. But again the question rises, are the inhabitants of the Dis that way because of the poisened earth or is it due to Del Mort.
If it is Del Mort then he must have been there an incredibly long time. And considering the corperate support for the supplies and the unique barter system used to distribute them it certainly leans in the direction of scientific experimentation as apposed to natural selection for the genetic crossovers.
But back to the dogboys, they have to be manipulated to be that way. The chances of multiple individuals all expressing the same genetic mutations are close to infinite.
Thoughts?

I'd have to agree that alll the 'goboys expressing the mutation at once is pretty rare, yet what if there was one mutation in the past that was stable and fertile, rare i know most mutants are infertile yet it is possible. Perhaps the mutation was on the Y chromosone and as a result only the male descendants manifest the mutation. Having never read NA this is all conjecture and is prolly refuted in the book (and is prolly bad science but hey) but it bears thinkinag about.

Yeah, there's no mention of 'gogirls... sounds like a lonely species to be... :s
