As someone who is just starting a hopefully fruitful career as a writer it is important to know where people stand in regards to your rights of ownership when it comes to original work.
When you post an original piece of work (be it art, writing..etc) anywhere online or offline you risk that piece of work being unavailable for further publication.
Take for example a story posted on this site, by the simple act of putting it in a thread you have just lost your ability to give first electronic publishing rights to a publisher. This is the same on any forum or media publishing site, and may also apply in the offline world.
Posting parts of written works is far less risky although not a fool proof system. So if you are happy to share your work with the world for free then feel free to post it, we will love to read it. If you have hopes of getting it published then join a crit group or ask someone on the forum or outside world to take a look.
Please take this advice on board, it may help in the future.
And remember; NEVER EVER post work on to facebook. Their terms and conditions clearly state that they take ownership of any work on their site no matter who it is posted by. I'm sure many a person has lost something important due to not knowing this annoying fact.
Good luck.

Yes, I'm thinking of moving the Tara Sharp whodunnits exlcusively to the website and placing links on facebook for that very reason.

*hugs* Thanks for this, Jamie. Hope it hasn't prevented you from getting anything published?

Hasn't stopped me from publishing thankfully. The stuff i've put up previously hadn't been finished and thankfully never registered elsewhere. I've been lucky in that regard.
