Do we know what year the books actually take place in? Just out of casual interest - I'm wondering how long our pollution and journalists have to get that bad...

I don't think there's ever any real indication... it's just general near-future, I guess.

well we have to take into consideration mentions of the first world falling on their ass and the third world not responding too kindly (in all fairness no grudge) so that would take some time, maybe not at the rate Bush is goin

Ooh! Politics... we can send a copy of NA to Bush and say, "This is what you'll turn the world into if you don't watch it!"

The year is something I've been more than a little curious about too I must admit. With the events of CN and such overt displays of shamanism/voodun, it certainly feels as though the sixth age (Mayan calender 2012+) has occured and the new order of the world has begun. The references to the overpolluted europe and the decay of the northern hemisphere generally smack of global climate change. Probably the melting of the ice caps dumping its cold water into the atlantic destroying the gulf stream and forcing another ice age on the northern hemisphere. I seem to have digressed. I would posit a guess considering the level of decay in the Dis and elsewhere in the tert. The level of nano tech tech and biotech that the year would be somewhere around the sixty years in the future. Of course its only an opinion.

Good logic. Oh, Marianne? Care to shed some light?

Well, in Nylon Ange Parrish specifically referred to herself as a "Twenty first century Warlord"...so that would indicate that the stories take place somewhere between the year 2000 and the year 2099. Which I realize doesn't really help to narrow it down.

Considering the technology of the era appears to be far more advanced than that of our own, I would have to agree with the above post, although possibly say that perhaps it's between the years of 2050 and 2099. I mean, the place does appear to be pretty degredated. So it can't be set between 2000 and 2008 (Our era), for obvious reasons...

Ooh! Politics... we can send a copy of NA to Bush and say, "This is what you'll turn the world into if you don't watch it!" He would probably think it was a book featuring NY. "Noo Yawk? That's where them towers fell down." Here are another set of clues: Travel on old motorcycles is still possible-this points to some sort of fossil fuel still being available. Nanosurgery needed for extreme medical experiments is also available, if unreliable. Nanomachinery is possible and widely used in Viva. Certain linguistics have changed-eg. America is now "Merika". My guess would be mid twenty-first century.
