Hey guys, this is mostly for Marianne but anyone should chuck in their thoughts
I was wondering what your opinion is on submitting around the different media types. The story I submitted got rejected from the CSfG anthology in the nicest way but it got such a good response from friends that I want to find a home for it.
The best option available is probably web magazines, but does that really count in terms of getting a story out and about?
What do you think the best way to get short fiction out into the world is?
Thanks

Hi IM,
you must absolutely send it out again. Some stories can take many subs before they find their home. Webzines are just as important as print mags when it comes to building your publishing CV.
I'll get Trent Jamison to stop by and recommend some markets. He's got 3 nominations in the latest Aurealis Awards and know the ss market really well.
Full lshortlist is on my blog.

Hi IM,
There's plenty of places to submit to. Not just in Australia but O/S. It really depends on what sort of story you've written. When it comes to researching possible markets, Google is a great place to start, as are the Review sites ASif and The Fix Online - put those into google and you should find them easily, reading the reviews will give you a bit of a feel for what's out there.
I wouldn't worry about the Media - there are plenty of good online and e-magazines these days. Strange Horizons, Shiny (if you're writing something that is aimed at YA readers, which is a pretty broad category these days, I couldn't recommend them more highly), and Clarkesworld are just a few I'd suggest.
What I would suggest, if you're going to sub to something online, is that you read a couple of the stories of the market, see if it's a place you'd like to be published in.
There's also a great market finding engine called Story Pilot - Google should get that one for you too, but if it doesn't let me know and I'll email you some details. The best email addy to get me at is teacupthrenody at hotmail dot com
Hope that was useful. Oh, and remember to read the submission details of any market that you sub to. Getting those right will put in you in the editor's good books from the get go.
Cheers, Trent

Thanks Trent. Some good stuff there.
I've just submitted a piece to Vagabond Press and I'm putting together something for Alienskin Magazine.
Hopefully something gets through.

I'd totally just send it to every relevant company around and see if you get any bites. Really sorry to hear it didn't get picked up - it was a great piece, I really enjoyed it. Fingers crossed for you next time, and I'm actually back around the internet now if you want any proofing done.
