Hi Patch-ers,
I see a lot of writing and artistic talent amongst you and I encourage you to write, write, write; create create, create!
Mouse, I tutor at ENVISION in Brisbane, a novel writers workshop. There is also Clarion South a live in six week wshop for short stories. You should investigate them both and use them as a goal. They both have websites you can check out. MDP.

Hi Marianne, I've actually looked at both Envision and Clarion before. The simple fact of the matter is that, as a student, things like that aren't something I'm likely to be able to fit into my agenda any time soon. Mainly because of time and money shortages (the two things students never have enough of to spare!). One day, hopefully. I'd definitely like to go to something like that. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Hi Mouse (and all Patchers),
there's always the e-list for the Vision writers group in Brisbane. It's a good source of markets and tips. We have a lot spec fic writers subscribed to it. Follow the links from my links page.

You know, one day they're going to have cool stuff like that in the UK...
I'm on a creative writing degree, though, so I guess I shouldn't complain.
If anyone has any tips on how to adjust the fanfiction - original work ratio in favour of the original work, please, TELL ME! *is desperate*

But actually sitting in a real room with real people is good. As for the last bit - I'm prob'ly being dim but I don't understand the question... Sorry. I took a blow to the head earlier - from the floor.

I used to write copious amounts of fanfic, and found it extremely hard to shift gears into original writing.
For one thing, I write fanfic much much faster than original stories. Original stories have to sit and make themselves comfy in my head for a long time before they make their way onto the page. Perhaps it is because with fanfic there is a fully realised world all ready for me to step into. Perhaps it's something else.
Another hurdle I had to jump is that all the fanfic writing I was doing was in web-based communities or clubs. These are very hard to disengage from! Especially if you get a lot of social input, support and positive feedback from fellow members.
I tried a few times to up my original writing as compared with the amount of time and words I was devoting to fanfic. In the end the only thing that worked for me was to drop out of all my fanfic groups. I had to completely disconnect from them in order to have the mental space, the time, and the inclination to write more original stories.
One that DEFINITELY helped though was joining a writing group here in Brisbane. I joined Vision. It was a godsend as I basically had another community to join to replace the ones I had left. And these were people who, like me, were struggling with writing original stories. I got the support and feedback that I needed and was able to keep going with it.
Since then I've published four short stories - all home-grown, original recipe, belonging to me. That sure felt good knowing it originated from within me, instead of the brain of another author whose world I had borrowed for a while.

Eeek... I may have to do the same. The amount of fanfic I write is just not good... I actually have 150 000 words archived on fanfiction.net. If I can ever finish the big epic I'm doing, I'm going to try to disengage from it. Thanks for the tip.

I surely am. I still have a few things to work out (like if I'm going to have to be on clinical placement for university then, but I think that's in second semester), and how I'd get there etc, but hopefully I will be able to. Oh, I'd better ask if there's a rule saying you have to be eighteen... I didn't see anything specifying that... Because I'll be short by three months if there is. Maybe if I bring a note from my mum? ;D
