There is something special about books, something that will make us treasure them even if every novel suddenly becomes available in ebook form. But what is it to you that makes books so special? What is your particular love?
I must admit to a devotion to a love of difficult finds, first editions and hard covers. Sydney is good for it, plenty of secondhand book stores to rummage through.

Its a very sense driven think - sight, smell, feel. I love old books too, and fighting an urge to collect. I already have some lovely old hardbacks of Alice in Wonderland, Black Beauty and a few others. The illustrations are magnificent. I have all the Secret Seven in hardcover as well. I get a kind of gloating feeling when I look at my bookcases.

I just like the fact that you can curl up in a corner with one and be transported to a different world without worrying that you're exceeding your bandwidth limit/your battery's going dead/you're going to break your hardware. As Marianne says, they do smell and feel wonderful, too. And the prettiness of the covers/pictures... *love* My absolute favourite books visually are the Abarat books by Clive Barker - they're full of colourful paintings as well as the story, and it's just amazing to read them. Also Roald Dahl/Quentin Blake - a winning combination! And sometimes I really do judge a book by its cover... *cough*NylonAngel!*cough* I would never have bought and read it if I hadn't been lured in by the blue-and-white-and-Parrish-all-over cover. XD

I am a natural hoarder and enjoy the collection and the almost OCD-like obsession I have with collecting the works of my favourite authors. I am nine tenths the way through my Neil Gaiman collection and of course, I have just about everything by MDP except short stories published in anthologies.
My partner is a big proponent of ebooks and has had an ebook for years. Of course, with the announcement of the iPad, there is a resurgence of ideas about the ebook because of the iTunes business model. Personally, I think there will be a lot of disappointment with this capacity of the device as it is a back-lit screen. Your eyes will tire while reading off it, the same way as when you stare at your computer screen too long.
People also enjoy the smell and feel of books. Peculiar. Then, you can have picture books and pop-up books and comic books and everything else.
Ebooks will grow in popularity and eventually overtake sales of hardcopy print media because of the immediacy and convenience of storage, but like LPs are to MP3, the true enthusiast will go for the hard format.
