All In the Preparation

Hey MDP and all,

What preparation would you before starting to write the body of a story?

I'm what they call an 'organic writer' (apparently) - I just write and see what grows. I don't research, I don't plan, and hence I don't get anywhere most of the time. XD

Any writer geared for success, I think, would have to know where the story was going to end up, motivations of protagonists, antagonists, supporting characters, etc... Basically, to have most of it planned out already.

I lack the discipline to do this. ;D Good luck!

I'm half and half - a bit organic, a bit of planning. I find if I get too detailed in my planning, I get bored. Having said that, read this inspiring article by Stephen Cannell. Maybe his level of planning is why he is so successful:
