Hi guys,
I noticed Kelley Armstrong's (one of our previous, wonderful guests) is offering giveaway grab bags for every person who buys the hardcover of her new book. The bag consists of bookmarks, key rings etc. This is Kelley's initiative not her publishers. I wondered what you guys think about that sort of thing? Does that incline you to go and buy the book? What sort of things might you like to get free from a favourite author?

Hi Marianne Giveaways wouldn't get me to buy a book anymore than I would anyway. It's the book itself that's worth going for, not the free gift. I wouldn't have bought the Parrish books just because they came with a Loyl keyring and a bookmark with pictures of Parrish in various stages of undress, I bought them because the writing style was good and the concept was what I am into.
Though if it came to giveaways just for the sake of giveaways bookmarks aren't that good because they are too easily misplaced. Key-rings are good because you can't lose them. Stickers would be nice, easy to attach to various objects and grab the attention.
Not sure what else would be good, anything that wouldn't get lost or that you could keep on you.

ditto IM, I'm not going to buy a book just cause I get free stuff with it...it might make me more likely to buy the hardcover of a favourite author rather than wait for the paperback and get no free stuff...
It might get me to look at a book more though...but then I'd just get it out of the library to see if it was any good, rather than buy it there and then.
I agree that bookmarks aren't that great...I'd be going for stickers...maybe keyrings, and (I don't know how to describe this, and I forget the terminology) those bags that people like supre are using instead of plastic - like the coles green bags but with a slightly longer strap and design - have you seen the UQ ones marianne? dark blue with the logo on each side made out of that recycled material, whatever it is.
I say them mainly because I love the things (not so much the coles type as the more shoulder-bag ones) and use them all the time.
Not sure what else... ;D sorry if I'm a bit hard to understand, I'm not sure if what I wrote made sense or not.

Hmmm! thanks guys.
What about a serialised Parrish story. On either a weekly or monthly basis. Only for subscribers - but still free?

That would be good ;D
The only problem with that kind of thing (and I don't mean this specifically for you) is that it means the author has to have something written on a weekly/monthly basis that doesn't then interfere with plotlines of later stories, and is self contained enough that it doesn't make later novels lose meaning if you haven't read the serialised story...
I know that comment is slightly off topic for the would-I-buy-a-novel-for-giveaways thing...more on the authors side than the readers, but I thought I'd mention it anyway - more for the greater scheme of giveaways than for the specific Parrish one.

How good is the new Kelley book? I loved it... I didn't get any freebies though. Damn you, UK! On topic, though: I think having free merchandise is something I would love if it was done by my very favourite authors (of which you are one, Marianne), but I would buy the book with or without... A Parrish serial is something I would seriously squee over, though. I'd subscribe in an instant. If you're interested in writing it, I'd be interested in reading it.

I don't mind freebies! Freebies is great! However, the problem with freebies is that it can give the wrong message to a few people. Think of it as in a Middle School President Election. The one candidate that wants to really make changes in the school and has a good grasp of what the kids want, however his/her opponent just wants the title of President and starts to give out free candy and ice cream just so she/he can get the most votes. A new book should just be the new book (And maybe the Author's signature on it ) then when the author creates a sequel or a continueing franchise off it, then you can add free stuff for the continued support of the fans. Stickers, Posters(More expensive), Keychains, discount coupons... Just a few I'd be interested in. ;D
