We're having a short story competition over at SFFworld.com. As long as the story is Speculative Fiction you can write anything you want (it has to fit within the rules of the site - no graphic sex, no pointless violence, no fanfic) and it is completely free to enter. The prize is world wide adoration, having your story hosted on the site and also a signed copy of "The Twins" the first book in the Gemquest series by Gary Wassner, an up and coming author from the States. If you want any more details either nag me or check out - www.sffworld.com/news/135.htmlThe closing date is 31/8/05 Get writing! J

Oh come on!
Spec fic is easy! It doesn't have to swords and sorcery, or hard sci-fi. It can be a fairy tale, a ghost story, anything at all as long as it is a little odd...

Imagine, hypothetically, that someone didn't know what speculative fiction was. What would you tell them?

Why am I getting MY arse kicked if I don't enter?? If I have to enter under threat of arse-kicking, so do you. : P If I write something between now and the closing date that fits the bill I'll enter it. I don't do short stories much though. Just... no. Actually, I have an old piece kicking around that might fit, but we'll see. Thanks for sharing the info Jac!

Imagine, hypothetically, that someone didn't know what speculative fiction was. What would you tell them? I'd tell them that Speculative fiction is an umbrella term for a number of genres. It includes such things as Sci-fi, fantasy and horror but also anything that has an aspect of the supernatural or the unexplained. It is not straight fiction but it pretty much anything else. It is much easier to say what Spec fic isn't as it is such a huge category.

This is something I'd love to have a go at but I'm no writer. Back in school I couldn't write more that half a page on anything. I struggled to write a 4 page essay in about 2-3 months. Maybe that was due to laziness though.
